Sculpting Miniatures - Practing Hands

Description

Obviously, since I make dolls, I simply can't run away from making tiny hands. For Violet, her hands were so tiny I kind of managed anyway - but going just slightly bigger is really, really tough... Hands that are a bit too small for wiring, but a bit too big to just sculpt without any armature. I'm finding this extremely difficult, especially since I don't want to sculpt chubby childrens hands.

Now, I've tried making hands out of DAS - but it has a serious flaw when it comes to something so complex as a hand: it dries out too quickly, and is much too soft. Then I tried polymer, and had pretty much the opposite problem. No matter how much I worked it, it was too hard to sculpt details.

So I had this crazy idea (and you who've followed me a while know I usually try them out even though they sound mad) to test if I could make one out of Plasticine. For the uninitiated, Plasticine is a "clay" that doesn't dry, and if you heat it it melts. It turned out Plasticine that hasn't been heated was much easier to work with. Now I just have to read up on how to get it perfectly smooth (I think I read gasoline somewhere...) and I can try to cast it. This particular hand is slightly bigger than what I need for Elsa (see my gallery), but it might work for Mistral.
